Oregon HEAT IRS form 990 2006-2007 Oregon HEAT develops and coordinates resources to help low-income Oregonians meet their energy needs and achieve energy self-reliance through energy education and advocacy. What is Oregon HEAT? Oregon HEAT is an independent nonprofit organization founded in 1989 as Oregon Energy Services to help low-income Oregonians become more energy self-reliant. Oregon HEAT's primary program objective is to prevent disconnection of utility service during inclement weather by providing bill payment assistance to low-income households in emergency situations. Oregon HEAT partners with 34 local community and social service organizations throughout the state to help deliver energy assistance to qualifying households. Over the years, Oregon HEAT partners, funders and supporters have helped to keep the heat and lights on for tens of thousands of low-income households. Oregon HEAT makes payments directly to utilities or venders on behalf of low-income customers who qualify for assistance. We work year-round to raise funds for energy assistance in communities across Oregon. Money raised in a community stays in that community. In fact, 90 cents of every dollar donated goes directly into program delivery, not administrative overhead. In Spring 2007, Charity Navigator awarded Oregon HEAT its highest rating for organizational efficiency and capacity for the fourth consecutive year. Please check www.charitynavigator.org. To help low-income households move toward self-reliance, Oregon HEAT is stepping up its efforts to provide energy conservation education, and advocating access to energy resources for low-income Oregonians. Oregon HEAT is a partnership of individuals, social service agencies and utilities working together to keep the homes of low-income Oregonians warm and safe. The majority of funding for Oregon HEAT comes from donations from individuals and small foundation grants. All donations collected across the state are spent in the region from which they came (i.e., funds raised in Medford are spent in Southern Oregon, funds raised in Pendleton are spent in Eastern Oregon, funds raised in Bend are spent in Central Oregon, etc.). Additional cash donations and in-kind support come from local businesses, Pacific Power, Special programs are funded through foundation grants from the Meyer Memorial Trust, Spirit Mountain Community Fund and The Oregon Community Foundation. Oregon’s Department of Justice allocated funds from energy settlements to Oregon HEAT, a one-time disbursement supporting our energy assistance and self-reliance programs. Oregon HEAT receives no federal or state operating support, and is not an agency with the United Way. When illness, unemployment, or disasters occur, a little help keeping the heat on in the winter can hold a family together, keep an elderly person healthy, or prevent homelessness.
