Meeting Emergencies: Bill Payment Assistance

“Thank you, Oregon HEAT. People who do good works don’t get thanked enough. Today, Oregon HEAT opened up my whole world!” – Katherine in Beaverton

Through collaboration with 34 agency partners, Oregon HEAT's core program assists people with paying utility bills or purchasing bulk fuels (oil, propane and wood) in emergencies.
Local agency staff screen applications for assistance and ensure that only people with a genuine need receive help from Oregon HEAT.

An overwhelming 428,000 Oregon households qualify for energy assistance. Last year, Oregon HEAT was able to help more than 28,000 people keep the heat and lights on.

Neighbor Helping Neighbor: Heating Oil Program

Partnering with the environmental award-winning oil recycler, ORRCO , Oregon HEAT began its state-wide oil donation program in November 2007.

Home-heating oil and recycled petroleum products – including commercially used crankcase oil converted into fuel for home-heating – are donated to Oregon HEAT by individuals, businesses and industry and used to help local families stay safe and warm in their homes.

Donations go to assist local families facing a home-heating crisis. All fuels and funds donated for oil-heat assistance are used in the community from which the donation came.

To donate heating oil, call or email Oregon HEAT and we will get contact ORRCO to arrange for pick up: 503-612-3790 or info@oregonheat.org

Moving Toward Energy Self-Reliance: Energy Smart

“Energy Smart has helped me to realize that I need to help myself. I want to blow the horn to get other people help, because this isn’t about getting a hand-out. This is about motivating yourself to advocate for you and your family.” – Durwood Gregory, Salem

Oregon HEAT is stepping up efforts to provide low-income households with energy conservation education and hardware to reduce energy use. The generous support of Meyer Memorial Trust helped launch the pilot in 2004, with a $250,000 matching grant over three years.

A truly innovative project that takes a holistic approach to meeting household needs, Energy Smart will lower energy bills to make them more affordable and reduce the need for straight bill payment assistance. Energy Smart will also identify the best ways to promote and encourage energy conservation education.

Spirit Mountain Community Fund provides integral project support pertaining to household self- reliance in Marion and Polk Counties. The Oregon Department of Justice also generously supports Energy Smart through a grant secured from the Duke and El Paso Corporation energy settlements.

Cool Stuff: Oregon HEAT does more than help people stay warm!

Equipment Assistance: Purchasing electrical and heating and cooling hardware, including furnace repairs, fans and thermostats. Oregon HEAT has purchased and distributed cooling fans to help seniors and low income families stay comfortable in hot weather.

Refrigerator Replacement: In 2003, Oregon HEAT replaced energy hog refrigerators in Benton, Linn, Lincoln, Morrow and Umatilla counties. This Refrigerator Replacement Pilot Program was funded through a generous $50,000 grant from the Oregon Department of Energy. 141 households received new, energy efficient models, with an estimated combined savings of $10,625 a year!

Information and Referral: Oregon HEAT makes referrals to other assistance programs and service agencies.
